The Journey
What inspired you to return natural?
Hi, I am a 64-year-old curly girl living in Sanford, MI, USA. I spent the first 50 years of my life fighting my hair and trying to make it smooth and "sexy." Many years ago in college, I was living in an un-vented 9apartment in Austin, Texas. It was unbearably hot, sitting under a dryer with rollers in my hair, so I decided to let my red hair show its natural curl.
We did not have ANY curly hair styling products at that time. After having my husband tell me I looked like a witch with my hair like that, I was traumatised and returned to heat styling to attempt to get smooth hair.
Every stylist who has ever cut my hair says the same thing..."I've never seen anyone with this much hair!" I prefer my hair long because the length at least pulls it down. I have had stylists try all sorts of things they swore would help my hair. The worst was the thinning shears! It made my already huge hair look twice as big! They have put "neutral gloss" (hair dye) on my hair insisting it would "seal" the hair shaft and control the frizz. It didn't. I have had the "Brazilian Blowout" straightening treatment. That one looked fantastic until I needed the roots retreated. My hair started breaking off by the handfuls and I had to cut it short.
After damaging my hair with heat tools and chemical straighteners, I finally said "To heck with this." I just got fed up with it all. "I'm going to accept what the good Lord gave me."
What were the challenges (if any) along the way of your healthy hair journey?
My curly journey has not been easy. I have travelled from Michigan to both Toronto and NYC pursuing curly hair specialists. Like most curly women, I have spent a small fortune on different products in an attempt to achieve curls rather than frizz. I have extremely thick hair that tends to be coarse. I have been known to layer up to five styling products at a time just to get some curl definition!
What is your number 1 curl tip?
My new number one curl tip is simple... switch to Flora & Curl products!
Discovering Flora & Curl
What made you buy Flora & Curl products? How did you hear about us?
I recently started seeing Flora & Curl products advertised on my Facebook feed. I ignored them at first thinking it was another "too good to be true" marketing ploy. I was intrigued enough to look up reviews on YouTube and decided to give this line a try.
How did you see your hair change after using Flora & Curl products?
I have only used the products for two weeks (two washdays) and am dumbfounded by the results. I would never have believed products could produce such a drastic change in my hair! My hair is softer and is curling rather than frizzing. I have soft, defined curls that last all week. About every other day I use water to reactivate the curl and remove frizz. Many people have asked what I did to my hair and the compliments have been non-stop.
Which Flora & Curl product is your favourite and why?
I can't choose a favourite since I am using four products as a system. I love this system not only for how it makes my hair look but also for the simplicity of my routine.
What is your current Flora & Curl haircare routine?
1. Wash with the Rose Water Cream Shampoo.
2. Condition with Rose Water Cream Conditioner under a heat cap for at least 30 minutes.
3. Apply the Sweet Hibiscus Curl Activating Lotion to very wet hair.
4. Layer the Sweet Hibiscus Curl Defining Gel.
5. Scrunch into hair until curls form.
6. Diffuse with my Dyson dryer starting with the head upside down for root lift and finishing upright.
What sets Flora & Curl apart from other brands/products on the market?
It actually performs as advertised and lasts between washing. It is simple to use. It also has a mild and pleasant aroma.
Thank you for sharing your journey with us, Yolanda! It took a while to accept your natural beauty, but at least you accepted your curls eventually. They are beautiful!
