Meet Farheen! Curly girl from Mumbai, India shares her natural curly journey with us. Farheen finds the time to give her curls TLC in lockdown, however experiences excess shedding due to her medication. How did she keep those curls healthy? Read more to find out! 

The Journey

What inspired you to return natural?

Hi! I am Farheen, and I’m a curly girl from Mumbai, India! As a little girl, I had wavy hair, which gradually became curly as I grew up. Like most of my fellow Indian girls, I was advised to comb my hair everyday, and hence I never knew that these cute little ringlets were hiding in my combed out locks!

Once, on an online forum, I read that curly hair shouldn’t be treated like straight hair, that it need not be combed everyday, etc., and came across CGM as well. Being a student back then, time and money were both scarce, so the only things that I took away from my research were the styling techniques, not combing my hair, and using microfibre towel to dry/scrunch my hair. These little changes also made such a huge difference to my hair! I was in love! But the products I used were still full of harsh ingredients!!

Fast forward a few more years, and Covid-19 hit! The months in lockdown really gave me time to re-discover CGM, and this time I switched out all my harmful products with more natural and CG-friendly ones! I also had the chance to try different products, styling techniques, etc. and to customise a routine that suits my hair’s needs! I’m now 10 months into CGM and even more obsessed and in love with my hair!

What were the challenges (if any) along the way of your healthy hair journey?

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 2 years ago, and the medication I take causes a lot of hair fall! So hair fall and the resultant thinning hair has been a challenge since a while, but I am positive that I will get better and my hair will be fuller and healthier! Also, I am regular with my scalp massages so I do see new growth in some places!

What is your number 1 curl tip?

My number 1 curl tip would be to try and not touch your hair while it’s drying. Whether you choose to diffuse or air dry, do not touch your hair until the gel cast is formed - this will greatly help your hair hold the curls for longer and also reduce frizz to a large extent!

Also, DC is very very important! Our hair is already made up of protein, so we need to provide it with moisture regularly to have healthy and balanced hair!

What is your current Flora & Curl haircare routine?

After shampooing and conditioning my hair, I use the Rose Water Detangling Lotion and style with Denman D3 brush, followed by glazing the clumps with the Sweet Hibiscus Curl Defining Gel, and scrunching all over. After diffusing and SOTC, my curls are at their softest and bounciest best!

I have a very sensitive nose, so the fragrance of a product is an important parameter for me.
