Braid Care, Protective Styling and Everything In-between

Braids are one of the most effective ways to protect your tresses. While you’ve spent hours in the hairdresser’s chair achieving the perfect braided look, your protective style is not only stylish and beautiful, but they are great for length retention and are a perfect low manipulation hairstyle.

Now while you maintain your protective style for as long as possible, your braids will need a bit of a reset throughout the weeks.

Here are some tips to help your keep your braids neat and looking fresh.

Wash Day

With all the refreshing, you may start to get a lot of product build up and will need to cleanse your scalp. An ACV rinse (Apple Cider Vinegar rinse) or sulphate free shampoo will do the trick. Remember when cleansing your scalp, it is best to first mix a little shampoo in a spray bottle with water and spray your scalp. Massaging to create a nice lather. Shampooing this way, causes less frizz on your braids, allow easy access to your scalp. It cuts out the amount of time your braids will be under water as overtime they can become heavy.

Remember, a fresh scalp is a happy scalp.

If you prefer not to not rinse out your conditioner after cleansing, why not try a leaving a little conditioner in or using a leave-in conditioner like our Organic Rose & Honey Leave-in Detangler.

Refresh, Moisturise and Seal

Even though your tresses are neatly tucked away anywhere from 1-2 months, it is super important to keep your hair and scalp moisturised. Your curls still need all the moisture and love too. This can be done by doing a quick refresh with a spray. Now this doesn’t have to be a long and fancy process. Mists like our Jasmine Oasis Hydrating Hair Mist is a perfect lightweight mist offering instant softness and moisture, and is a perfect alternative to water. It is botanically infused with Water, Aloe Vera and bioactive flower oils of Lavender, Jasmine and Sandalwood.

Flora & Curl tip: If you love to mix your products, then try this.

In a spray bottle, add some of our Jasmine Oasis Hydrating Hair Mist, Organic Rose & Honey Leave-in Detangler and African Citrus Superfruit Hair Oil. Shake, shake, shake and spritz.

Touch Ups

So it's about that time to take your braids out, but you're not quite ready to yet and want to rock your braided style one last time. Fear not, this is where you can refresh and touch up the front of your hairline. This is the area that is more likely to be seen. This can be done by re-braiding the hairline, or there are plenty of videos on YouTube that show how you can refresh without re-braiding.

Keep Em Fresh

Have you ever notice those little fly aways. Well sometimes they can get out of control, but this can be easily fixed with foam. Just like you would use foam to set your braids after getting them done, well foams like our Sweet Hibiscus Curl Volumizing Foam are perfect and lightweight to help keep those fly aways in check. Just place on a silk or satin scarf to set for a while, and you're good to go.

Night Routine

Keeping your braids wrapped in a silk scarf or bonnet will not only preserve your braids, but will also help prevent unwanted frizz while you sleep. If you don’t like using scarfs or bonnets, you can always opt for a silk or stain pillowcase to lay your braids down. Our Large Satin Scrunchies are the perfect accessory to gently keep your hair tied together.

How do you take care of your braids? We’d love for you to share your tips.

Naturally yours,

Team Flora & Curl
