When we begin our curl journey, we often get preoccupied with choosing the best stylers for our hair. While stylers enhance our curls, the real key to beautiful, healthy hair is a healthy scalp! Here are my top three tips to keeping your scalp nourished and balanced:
Apple Cider Vinegar Rinses
Apple cider vinegar is proven to restore the pH balance to your scalp and helps to seal the hair’s cuticle. These rinses can be easily added to your wash day approximately once a month. A basic recipe is to use 2 to 3 tablespoons of the vinegar mixed into 8 ounces of water. You should shampoo your hair, then follow with the acv rinse. Let the mixture sit on your hair for a few minutes before rinsing out. Follow with your favourite Flora and Curl conditioner for maximum hydration.
Scalp Massages
Regular scalp massages increase blood flow to the hair follicles which promotes hair growth, a conditioned scalp, and clear follicles. Use a light product such as Flora and Curl’s Super fruit oil which has grape-seed oil as its primary ingredient. Grape-seed oil is scientifically proven to penetrate the hair shaft and won’t leave the hair greasy. To massage your scalp, apply a few drops on your fingertips, and focus on massaging with the pads of your fingers and work in small, circular motions. Take a good five minutes to treat your scalp.
Regular Cleansing
This may seem like simple advice, but the foundation of any routine is cleansing the scalp. Going too long between washes or washing too often can cause the scalp environment to become imbalanced. How long to go between washes is a personal decision. A good rule is to not wait until your scalp is itchy or feels overly oily. When cleansing your scalp, as you would when massaging, use the pads of your fingers and be sure to scrub for 3 to 5 minutes before rinsing. The mechanical motion of scrubbing will remove debris and build up. Using a clarifying wash every so often such as Flora and Curl’s Coconut Mint Curl Refresh Wash which contains rhassoul clay, an ingredient that will detox and purify your scalp.
As the weather changes, and your hair needs shift, keeping your scalp clean, free of buildup, and well balanced becomes even more essential. Try adding these tips to your routine to reap the scalp benefits!
