Say NO to Harsh Ingredients

Say NO to Harsh Ingredients

First things first! I want you to go into your curly girl draw and pick out your favourite shampoo and conditioner. If you can see words that are similar to Sulphate, Silicone, Paraben, Mineral Oil and Petrolatum then these ingredients are not a curly girls best friend.
Using harsh ingredients on our hair will only harm your tresses in the long run.

Sulphates

  • Sulphate based products may leave your hair feeling squeaky clean, but these products can be drying and stripping on our hair.
  • It is a lathering agent that can strip your hair of its moisture and natural oils and proteins, making your tresses dry, brittle and can cause scalp irritation.
  • Using a sulphate shampoo once a month is OK to really cleanse and get rid of any build up on you hair and start your hair regime fresh for the month.
  • Pre - shampooing before washing your hair will give you that extra layer of protection, preserving moisture and not drying out your hair.

Silicones

  • Silicone based products do give great slip, allowing us to detangle easily and make our hair shiny, but over time can be damaging to your hair.
  • It can create a barrier over your hair not allowing any moisture to penetrate the hair shaft. Eventually creating product build up.

Parabens

  • Many studies have shown products that contain Parabens don't have a direct effect on us but again over time could be damaging to our hair and skin.
  • It is a preservative that makes our hair and beauty products last longer. Products on the shelves containing Parabens only have a small percentage which we are still able to use.

Mineral Oil/Petrolatum

  • Both of these ingredients are similar in a way. They are both heavy ingredients that tend to create a barrier overtime, sitting on top of our hair strands.
  • In time, products will not be able to penetrate our hair, which can then lead to product build up.

TIP:

In the ingredients section of your favourite hair products, items at the very top are the most concentrated. Meaning the product contains more of theses ingredients. For example: if the first ingredient is water, then the product is highly made with water. If Olive Oil is the last or few to last ingredients, then there is very little Olive Oil.

I guess the common theme is product build up. Certain hairs types are not affected by certain ingredients but that is what makes us all unique. Our hair journeys are all about trial and error and seeing what products and ingredients work well for your hair.

Naturally yours,
Kaisha

Shampoo and claywash are great!

I really like the clay wash and shampoo. The detangler and oil I'm less convinced on. The detangler only because it doesn't have a nice smell. The oil I'm not really sure what it's supposed to do, every time I've used it it's made my hair a bit greasy. But I love the clay wash, that is an amazing product and the shampoo has a great lather and lovely smell to it!

Hydrating hair mist!

This is the best hair refresher I have used! Super lightweight, non-greasy, and adds a lot of hydration to dry curls to bring the bounce back. I like to spray it in my hair before putting on my silk scarf before going to bed. A little more spray in the morning and my curls look great! It also smells heavenly! I will definitely be buying this again!

Good experience

very good: Detangler is good but the next day my hair is dehydrated. Shampoo (african) also dehydrates to some extent my hair.
