4 Tips to Help Retain Moisture This Spring/Summer

March 03, 2019

Retain Moisture with natural hair moisturiser

With the few days of great weather we've recently had, Spring is starting to grace its presence, and with the weather changing and the Spring and Summer months around the corner, our hair routines will become more care free. We see more and more wash and gos and any style that sees our natural hair being exposed to the sun. Just like Winter, the Summer sun can also be drying for our tresses, so retaining maximum moisture is key. Below we share 4 tips that are bound to help your natural hair retain more moisture during the Spring and Summer months ahead.

Creating A Moisturising Routine

As Naturalistas, we know that this is an important step to reviving dry strands. As textured hair tends to be drier, the sun doesn't help us either. Therefore we really need to protect our curls from the heat and what the weather provides. Whether it be daily, every few days or every week, the LOC or LCO method is one way to really give our tresses everything it needs to stay moisturised, soft and hydrated. If this 3 step method doesn't work for you, then try mixing things up and using two parts of this method or even co washing. It is all about trial and error and seeing what products and methods keep your curls hydrated.

Deep Conditioning Is Your Best Friend

I will never get tired of saying that deep conditioning is KEY! As always, a foundation for retaining moisture starts with wash day. A good wash day sets our hair for the many styles ahead. Deep conditioning helps revive, repair, gives our curls their bounce and adds moisture back into our hair giving it a fresh start. Try mixing your favourite deep conditioner with a good oil and some indirect heat to really help penetrate your strands and set your hair for the next process.

Water Water and More Water

The more water you drink, the more hydrated your strands will become, forever keeping your wash and gos moisturised. Your roots help feed your hair water from your body to the hair. Our roots soak up the water and distribute it evenly throughout the strands. Lacking water and becoming dehydrated will eventually lead to your hair becoming brittle and dry. Staying hydrated is key to not only keeping your body hydrated and healthy, but keeping your tresses moisturised too.

Protective Styling

Protective styling is one way to keep the moisture sealed in and hands away from the hair, giving our tresses a break. This is a great way to retain moisture and a lot of length. It also keeps the hair soft as you are able to moisturise and go without any fuss while protecting your natural hair underneath. While this is great, this carefree method doesn't mean we can't go without moisturising and neglecting our hair. Using a liquid such as our Jasmine Oasis Hydrating Hair Mist is great for applying ample moisture.

The key here is to stay hydrated by drinking at least 2 litres of water a day, be sure to use a moisturising method to keep hair moisturised, include deep conditioning on wash days and try to protective style.

Naturally yours,

Team Flora & Curl
